INTRODUCTION
The main characters of the story are Carl and Christine Nelson and their family. The story starts with their immigration to the United States from Sweden. After being in the United States a few years they filed for a homestead on the eastern shores of Hayden Lake. The only access to the property was by boat across the lake.
After “proving up” on the homestead they moved back to a farm near the west end of the lake. Here they lived and raised their family, while the homestead sat vacant and unused, except for their occasionally logging some of the timber.
The homesteading story takes up again with their son, Victor, and his wife, Vinettie, buying the homestead and moving there. There was still no road to the property, but in addition to access by boat, a trail led to the property.
The story continues with the life experiences of Victor and Vinettie and their family, until they sold the farm to non-family members. During this almost 30 year period of time the farm, with much hard work, slowly moved from a pioneer status to being somewhat modern. There were roads by the property, electricity, a school bus, but still no telephone.
